Sims 4 stuck in Patch-Verify-Repeat loop

Hello, I have The Sims 4 through Steam, just the base game and some content deemed "Digital Deluxe" as well as the latest free Pet Stuff update. I have no mods and no custom content.  Starting yesterday (December 6, 2023) when I go to launch the game through the desktop icon, it opens in Steam and says that it needs to patch before I can start the game. It progresses through the patch to 100% then switches to verifying the files, which it does to 100% and then immediately launches the patch once again. Thinking it was perhaps just a really large/involved patch, I left it to do it's thing or 6 hours, and it was still in the patch--verify-repeat loop. I shut my computer down for the night, then restarted again today. Once again it enters the patch-verify-repeat loop. It did so for 2 hours today, but then I stopped it and started looking for solutions. I tried launching from the EA app directly, and when I do, it opens a "launching game" dialogue, shows a progress bar that bounces around (10%-70%-20%-50% style) then closes and does not launch the game. I found a thread that said to try removing the Sims 4 folder from the EA folder to give it  a chance to "clean download," so I did that and the loop persisted, as well as no additional files being added to the EA folder. I filed a report in the EA app and have the support ticket number or whatever that long string of numbers they give you at the end is. Wondering what, if any, next steps might be?

For clarity, I did also try to get support through Steam, but was told that Sims 4 is not a supported Steam game and to contact EA, so there's no help from that end. Thank you in advance for any help.

  • @TheWinterCrowe  Can you repair the game in Steam?  Right-click the Sims 4 tile in your game library and select > Properties > Local files > Verify integrity of the game files to try.

If that doesn't help, the fastest way to fix this is to uninstall and reinstall Sims 4, through Steam if you own any content there.  You'll get a fresh copy of the fully-updated game.

Your saves and other user files are, or were, in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4.  You can restore them later, but for now, I'd suggest making a backup copy just to have one on hand.

Thank you so much! I tried the repair option in Steam, and while it did identify one file as corrupted, it wasn't able to resolve it, so I moved on to uninstalling and reinstalling, and that worked! Somehow, it even kept my Sims data as well? I guess there's some cloud function or something I wasn't aware of? Anyway, I hadn't thought of uninstalling as a solution, so thank you so much!

@TheWinterCrowe  You're very welcome.  As for the saves and other user data, all of it is stored in Documents > Electronic Arts > The Sims 4, within various subfolders.  This Sims 4 folder doesn't get deleted when you uninstall the game itself.  But it's best to make a backup of this folder, or at least the saves and Tray folders, every once in a while.  You never know when you'll run into computer problems that affect your data.
