Lost all my career mode saves

On launching the game today it asked me to create a new settings profile out of nowhere and after that I found that my career mode saves were all gone. When i read forums related to this I found that the files have "disappeared from your PC/console" and "it's not possible to recover them" but my question is how did they disappear? So I can keep myself safe from this in future.
