Oversimplified Mechanics & Loss of Skill Gap

I've been playing Fifa/FC for many years, and I've noticed a trend that concerns me: the gameplay mechanics are becoming increasingly simplified. Mechanics that once rewarded skill are being replaced by features that remove challenge and execution.

Dribbling

Dribbling now relies heavily on holding one button (R1) for controlled sprint, allowing players to glide past defenders without needing to learn proper dribbling techniques. In previous games, effective dribbling required mastering traps, feints, short bursts of acceleration, and skill moves. The current system doesn't reward that learning curve, when a single input can be just as effective, it reduces the gap between experienced and new players. It punishes those who took the time to learn the complexity of dribbling and risks alienating the most loyal player base.

Tackling

Defending feels too automated. I can understand that auto-tackling is useful in certain situations, but players with low standing tackle stats often win the ball just as effectively as those with high stats. Giving the feeling that attributes have less meaning

Shooting

Outside the box shots, especially trivela and finesse shots are more consistent and dangerous than well-worked chances inside the box.

Timed finishing was meant to add depth, but once mastered, it becomes muscle memory rather than a true skill test. Choosing the right shot type in the right moment should matter more than tapping a button twice.

The newer free kick system uses a trajectory line showing you exactly where the ball will go. It turns free kicks into something predictable and overly guided. I believe a more natural system, where the players use their own perspective to aim, would be more satisfying and immersive.

Gimmick Mechanics

Player Lock and Power Shots feel more like gimmicks than skill-based mechanics. Player Lock relies on AI involvement as much as user input, and Power Shots break immersion with unrealistic speed and animation.

I feel like past Fifa games would reward you for the time and effort you put in to understand the deeper mechanics. Now it feels like mechanics are simplified to accommodate quick, casual play, which comes at the expense of the skill gap, making high-level mechanics feel irrelevant when low-effort inputs get the same results

I'm not sure if everyone would agree, but I wanted to share my thoughts in the hope future iterations of the game consider bringing more depth and skill based mechanics back to the gameplay.

  • All ea would have to do is flip a switch and make offense manual. This would increase the skill gap the most without needing any changes. To be honest I don’t think the community actually wants a bigger skill gap. If anything it’s always nerf defense and make offense even easier.

Making offense manual may help, but it wouldn't fix the core problems. You'd just end up with manual gameplay on top of low skill overpowered mechanics, which honestly makes things worse. The problem is that so many mechanics rely on basic inputs for high reward. There's no satisfaction in mastering complex mechanics anymore. If someone can dribble more effectively just by holding 1 button than someone who's spent years practicing the complexity of dribbling, then the skill gap is nonexistent.

  • I don’t see how it wouldn’t be the biggest skill increase. Some wouldn’t even be able to score a goal on manual or even make a pass. I think people are just used to smashing buttons on offense.

I'm not disagreeing, obviously making the offense more manual will increase the skill gap. But it doesn’t fix the core issue with the gameplay. The game has too many mechanics that require barely any input for high reward, which kills the incentive to learn and improve. I don’t see how holding one button to dribble effectively around a defender feels rewarding or skillful.

Until EA starts valuing complexity and rewarding real user control, the skill gap will keep decreasing. And if they make offense manual without first reworking these oversimplified mechanics, they’ll just become even more overpowered

  • Well said, fifa 23 actually had power shots as well but they added skill gap, not sure how ea fc 24 managed to remove what little skill gap that was left but they did :/ Dribbling is awful now because the tackling is so automatic and your just hoping to glitch through and R1 glitches the rest of your defenders. I remember vsing some demon skillers on older fifas. There usenrname would always be like XskillerX. they were rare to come across, some times you would vs a player who loved long shots, but they would actually have players with high shot power and longshots to do it. Nowadays you play the same match 20 games in a row, Might as well be vsing Ai

  • Yea green timed shots isn't much skill gap and whats even more insane is non timed shots were better in ea fc 25 for majority of the game. So they removed even more skill gap
