The game is in a better place without timed finishing. In more recent years especially, timed finishing has become nothing but an abusable mechanic that allows for broken shot techniques. Removing it is an all around better solution as it solves multiple problems at once.
I've seen a few people say about scoring from outside of the box, but I've managed it multiple times without timed finishing. Long shots are supposed to be harder to score as they provide ample time for a save, and the increased distance allows for more ball movement decreasing accuracy.

The fact anyone can have an indicator removes the necessity of any skill, most of us aren't playing in the pro scene or streaming so people are bound to abuse the indicator.
Precision shooting is a much better mechanic as you have nothing adjusting power or accuracy for you, again there is an indicator which removes some skill, though I'm not sure it's entirely accurate based off of some shots I've had.
They will always include indicators for everything as people need to learn how to do them, it's just that some mechanics are unmanageable. I think it was TheFutAccountants stream, but the dev on there said that if they want to nerf timed finishing they have to nerf the entirety of shooting, making the general gameplay for everyone else worse. It sounds like as long as timed finishing is in the game it's a no win situation for the devs, so it makes sense to remove it.
I hardly ever use timed shooting, but I wish that instead of removing it they would have restricted it to volleys. I've never used the indicator even once, and my favorite goals I've ever scored came from long range and tight angle volleys that I managed to time perfectly. And although it was very rare, it no longer being possible to pull that off is a little disappointing. Even if I score that type of goal again, it just won't feel the same as knowing you took that extra step to convert it, not just the aim and the shot. That's just my opinion, but I understand those that want it gone.
