nightmare mode opens in hero chronicle once you complete all the other requirements in hero chronicles

smsredbulls worked for me - put a random gold player in my side, played the skill games and matches in the Hero Chronicles and it completed first time.

Just adding them to your main lineup is not enough, you need to add them to the main lineup and then enter the event and play the matches.
