It has to be asked: What problem was EA trying to fix by ditching the shard system??? I know of NO ONE who was asking for this change, and literally everyone in my league (and in the forums) is mad or, at best, annoyed with the sudden change — especially on such a highly anticipated event as TOTY.
It seems readily apparent that this new system is designed to try and coerce users into spending $$$ in order to obtain meta players. Whereas F2Pers could “grind” for a month under the previous shard system and have some degree of confidence that they could eventually win a top player (and not just a random one, but one that met a need in their squad), we are now confronted with a system that seems explicitly designed to confound “grinders” and compel spending in order to remain competitive. Perhaps this redesign meets a financial imperative for EA, but it doesn’t appear to meet any need/desire of the community and that’s why people are so rightfully pissed off.
EA has posted messages like this one before (e.g., after the start of the new season) where they request feedback, and users provide copious suggestions. But EA then provides ZERO acknowledgement or reply, much less any substantive improvements to the game. For example, we’ve repeatedly asked for improvements to game mechanics and matchmaking and we’ve received silence and inaction in response. So, when EA then comes out with this major overhaul of an event system that the vast majority of users were accustomed to and actually liked it’s not just jarring, it’s REALLY frustrating! We’ve told you exactly what you need to do to improve the game and create customer value and you’ve not only ignored us, but you’ve turned around and created a system that reduces value for F2Pers (which is to say the majority of users)! Honestly, did EA not imagine we’d feel insulted and disrespected by this move? Did you think we are so dumb that we would fail to see that this TOTY event gives F2Pers poorer rewards and, thereby, tries to coerce us into spending to remain competitive. The signature cards were the first sign we got that EA was quietly creating an FCM caste system of P2Pers on tops and F2Pers on the bottom, and this TOTY overhaul is the final confirmation. EA’s message couldn’t be clearer: “Pay up or become a permanent second-class citizen of this gaming community.”
I’ve been posting in here for most of the last year and I’ve consistently said the same thing: I’ve spent loads of money in years past on EA console titles because they delivered a really high-quality gaming experience. If EA wants my money for FCM then they need to provide similar value and that value doesn’t arise from pumping out an endless stream of player cards alone. I have to be able to use the players I win in matches that are consistently fair and fun. Currently, FCM matchplay is neither consistent nor particularly fun (because it is so infuriatingly inconsistent!). Users have told EA what needs to be fixed, and EA has instead chosen to “fix” a shard system that wasn’t “broken.” Go figure!
At this point the request for feedback seems highly performative coming from EA because they don’t seem to ever actually listen to and act on what the community is saying. Personally, I spend a lot of my time in here furious at how futile it seems to compose a thoughtful, substantive post. Everytime I write one there is a voice asking “Why are you even bothering? EA doesn’t actually care.” Well, I guess I love football enough that I keep hoping I’m wrong. I keep hoping against hope that the company that once claimed “if it’s in the game, it’s in the game” will rediscover its pride and actually do right by the sport we love. EA has given me no reason to harbor this irrational hope, just as they’ve given me no reason to spend my hard-earned $$$ on this game (turned glorified casino), but I keep daring them to prove me wrong.
