This is still a work in progress. The last attempt to fix it has gone south, as it broke the chances distribution, so they rolled it back.
There was no ETA on the fix.
p.s. I am waiting to get matched up with you :P
Is EA still working on this? It’s still happening…

Either stop making such lopsided/unfair matches, or at least give us equally lopsided matches where the opponent is -30/-40 ranks below us!

The issue is, that once you get that far up in champs there is a very limited user pool for you to match against … so, you either match someone quickly because they meet the matching criteria (similar rank, similar region, requested a match), otherwise it starts to spread the net wider.
once you hit champs you can no longer drop below or match with people below champs (some might disagree, but I personally think the single best adjustment to rivals that has ever been introduced), so when the bet is cast there is generally far more above scope than there is below.
its a hard one, and I have never got further than about champs step 5 so can’t really relate, but I imagine it would be frustrating …

I understand it’s a limited user pool and I have said repeatedly that I’d be happy to wait a little longer for a fair match. I’m sure others would agree. But what EA seems to be doing is using us lower-ranked players as “cannon fodder” for the “whales” in the higher ranks of FC Champions and that just feels abusive (not to mention totally unnecessary).
I’m fine being matched against someone +20 ranks. That seems like a reasonable compromise in order to maintain a broad enough pool of potential matches. But matching players separated by 30, 40, or more ranks is a bridge too far — it’s a guaranteed L for the lower ranked user and that’s just no fun.
And isn’t this supposed to be fun? (Not to mention fair?) Fun and fairness should be core values at the heart of every gaming experience and I have yet to hear anyone from EA explain how the current matchmaking fits these criteria for the folks in FC Champions 0-19 ranks. With all due respect mendozzamagic, are you really prepared to argue that the current number of uncompetitive matches is fun and fair? Wouldn’t you rather face someone on your own level instead waste your time playing a match you have no realistic chance of winning?

I can't talk details because these are not shared with non EA staff. However, what I have been consistently told by the dev I talk to often, that it is a complex issue that cannot be fixed through content update. For now they have fixed chances distribution.
Which to me (and I want to make it very clear that this is my take on it, not what EA said) indicates that EA probably needs to change a fair bit in the logic or code and it will wait for a major client update. I'll keep moaning about it even that it helps me reach 50* faster in VSA 🙈

As usual, appreciate the info. Certainly wish someone from EA would say something more definitive in the way of a commitment to addressing it (so I can stop carping about it and sit tight for a fix). Absent that, I feel like I gotta do the squeaky wheel routine. 🤷♂️

It is on their radar for sure and likely high up the list, as matchmaking issues are not just VSA related with star/ovr difference. There are issues across the entire DR where you get matched across the globe, timeouts, dropouts after matching, and so on. You see a lot of complaints through Discord, Reddit, here, etc. From what I have seen, the whales and hardcores (Pros) also don't want to play vs. newbies or much lower OVRs, as it's "boring", so it goes both ways.
Pulsar is pushing it as a CM as well, so surely once something becomes more official, it'll be shared. Keep checking on this post every few weeks, though. Helps CMs with reports on "what's broken" right now in FCM.
