What roles do my defenders have if they can't track anything?

I have the same problem. I have no control over my defenders. They rush forward like crazy to attack, can't recover the ball, and are easily left behind by players who are, in theory, slower than them. Calm down, it gets worse. My goalkeeper has already left the goal to attack, leaving my defense unguarded. This is in MANAGER. The game does this to hurt us. Too bad, I'm not going to spend a penny to “improve” it.
