After seeing there was another patch today I went back and loaded my old save just before the end of the overlord final boss and this time the achievement popped immediately after completing the final conversation.
Not sure if it was down to today's patch or something else they've done but might be worth trying again for those having issues.

Monday's patch did correct some syncing issues with in-game achievements on Xbox, so it's definitely worth trying again if anyone's playing on Xbox and had an issue with achievements popping up.

@EA_Mako: This issue happened to me on the PC platform for the record. I was able to get it to pop after reloading to a point just before the final boss fight though...
