FEEDBACK BY ME FAN SINCE 2007

SPOILERS!

Let me start off by saying that I have been a Mass Effect fan since the release of the first Mass Effect game on the 360 in 2007. I probably own every piece of Mass Effect product out there (okay, maybe not all, but I am quite the fan and collector). My intent is to let those at BioWare know that my feedback is not by some measly 13 year old who just happened to pick up the game because he thought the cover was cool. I would appreciate if my feedback is seriously because I LOVE this franchise so much.Mass Effect Andromeda (ME:A) was not a horrible game. I thoroughly enjoyed it. However, I was also quite disappointed because I expected ME:A to blow my mind away. But my mind wasn’t blown away, hence the disappointment.

I have just completed the game on April 2, 2017. I put in a total of 4 days, 5 hours, and 27 minutes so far. Let’s start off with what I personally liked (LIKES):

  • I like the possibility that there could be more to come (Primus). Also, I feel like there are still unanswered questions: What will happen to Ellen Ryder? What is Primus's role? What is the role of the “kett” empire? Who are or were the Jardaan? What us the significance of Cora's last name and is she related to The Elusive Man? What happened to the Quarians, Volus, Hanar, etc? Ark? And was the Pathfinder or Captain Tali? Meridian seems too good to be true. What are its secrets?
  • There is only a small amount of loot that remains after a firefight. I don't like having to pick up so much. 3-4 is a good number. You have done well not littering the battleground with too much of it.
  • I would like to say “thank you” to the environmental artists. They have done a FANTASTIC job with the different worlds and environments. The colors were beautiful. It almost reminded me of The Witcher 3. I say “almost” because I do not think any game developer can beat the environment artwork as CD Projekt Red. I don’t know which team did the rain drops on the armor or the sweat off Ryder’s forehead, but that was pretty neat to see.
  • I loved exploring. Even though you can’t go to every planet and every corner of the map (which is understandable), I really had fun just going on my own little adventure when I felt taking a break from the main mission. The game is not boring at all, despite what others say. ME:A is exactly the type of Sci-Fi RPG that I love where I can escape from reality for a few hours.
  • I liked the idea of having loyalty missions. I don’t think they had a whole lot of depth to them, but still thankful that we can choose to do them or not.
  • I also like the little things like how Ryder swipes his fingers on his omni tool when done typing, especially when he’s opening doors. I appreciate little things like that.
  • SOME of the banter is good, but not as good as DAO. But there were times when I laughed out loud. For example, while in the Nomad on Eos, Ryder screamed “watch out!” only to wake up Vetra (why does she get all the fun banter?) who was probably asleep in the back of the nomad. I also found it hilarious when Vetra belly laughed while up in air in low gravity former planet. I’m sure I’ll hear more fun banter when I replay the game, mixing up the companions. I think banter is one of the special BioWare aspects I really enjoy and appreciate. So please, more of it!

Okay, so those were some of my favorite aspects that stood out. Here are some of the issues I personally had with the game (DISLIKES):

  • Why would you include the N7 logo with an N7/Shepard looking armor (red and black) ,as the front cover? I feel like it was misleading. Alec Ryder was an former N7, but Alec Ryder was not the protagonist. The protagonist Scott (or Sara) was not an N7, yet there was the N7 logo on the front cover of the game. You didn't need to mislead the fans if that’s what your intention was. We love Mass Effect. We would have bought the game anyway, even if it had Initiative colors on the cover. Throughout the production of Andromeda, you kept making the distinction that this was a new game, with a new protagonist, in a new galaxy. In fact, you loathed when people called it Mass Effect 4. If Andromeda was meant to be separate, why include N7 similarities?
  • Facial animation: I know you have heard nothing but negative feedback about the facial animations. Well I have to say that they all have merit. Many (not all) look like fake plastic Barbie doll faces. How can you go from Mass Effect 3 to this? Was there a new team working on it? At what point in the game testing did someone not say, “You know what, that just looks weird.” Some faces look sad and tired. Some look like they’ve had too much coffee. And some are just plain ugly. I’m not saying to have the entire list of characters look like super models, but at least make them look more realistic.
  • Combat: I hate the way the characters move to take cover. You had it down to perfection in ME3. Why change it? Ugh! I got used to it, but you did not want to be near me during this time while gaming. And speaking of combat, what did you do to the perfection of the weapons wheel and power wheel? Why change it? Why reinvent the wheel!? No pun intended. There is no ability to order my teammates because of this. Sure, I can tell them where to go or focus on a specific target. But that’s it! I want to tell Cora to prime the kett with her biotics so I can then immediately charge that SOB, creating an awesome biotic combo. Even the combos aren’t as satisfying. It doesn’t have that big of a KABOOOM just like in ME3. The colors are still pretty. But some of the combat sound effects are just not as impressive. Speaking of sounds, I wish you didn’t change the way the M-8 Avenger sounds. It had more of a pop sound in ME3. Now it just sounds like an ordinary rifle. How boring. It’s my favorite rifle in the series and you really messed that up for me. Another aspect of the combat is having to press that damn select button (or whatever Microsoft is now calling it these days) to access my weapons and consumables. I don’t even know when my cryo ammo is depleted. Can you please put the pretty little lit up icon on the gun, like the way you did in the other games? Pretty please? The lights are an indication that they’re still active. It’s helpful and would make me less angry to have to push the select button all the damn time.
  • There must be a way to better organize the numerous quests, side quests, and tasks. You have no idea how much it sucked to leave the Nexus, go to a planet on the other end of the cluster, and then realize that I could have completed a “task” on the Nexus. I am an organized fiend. I like to plan. I also like to be efficient. I hate sifting through all the menial tasks before I decide to leave the area. Why not just include the little tasks under the same planet/Tempest/Nexus, just like the other side quests?
  • Cache boxes are so hard to get sometimes. Gee thanks, I earn this reward, but you make it so hard to retrieve?
  • Would like a bigger inventory.
  • Some of the missions of having to activate the remnant towers became redundant and sometimes frustrating. There were times when figuring out where to go was not intuitive at all. There were times when I literally had no clue what to do. I just found myself hurrying to activate the towers, just to get the heck out to move on in the game.
  • Companion Customization: I absolutely hate Cora's hair. What the heck made you decide on a hairstyle like that? Of all the female hairstyles, you decided on that one? Cora was not appealing or interesting at all. Sure she kicked *, but there was no substance about her. I would have liked to customize the companions' gear and outfits. I felt like it was Dragon Age 2 all over again. So disappointed.
  • I hate Liam. He was more of an annoyance than anything. He made stupid decisions and just pissed me off. Why the hell would an N7 Pathfinder choose Liam on his team? So stupid.
  • Gil: Did not like how my male Ryder (who is straight and likes women) seemed to have a weird gay relationship with Gil. I purposely did not want a gay relationship and in no way my male was flirtatious with Gil, but some parts of their conversations were just awkward and uncomfortable, as if they were gay. FYI, I am not against gays, I just did not want my character being one.
  • Voice acting: Some of the conversations are awkward. They didn’t flow naturally. Some of the voice acting is not believable. Some sound dead tired. Some sounded like they were just being read off the script. It wasn’t horrible and I understand how difficult a task it is because not all the actors get pre-recordings. But I still feel like the awkwardness distracted a bit from the gaming experience.
  • The text too small. I know the text would be just fine for PC players. But I played it on the Xbox One. I had the same critique about The Witcher 3. I wear glasses and I still needed to strain my eyes sometimes, trying to read the text.
  • In order to get the "talk" option with NPCs, it seemed like I had to be next to them at the right angle, almost as if I had to be completely in their faces, practically molesting them.
  • I hate climbing up steep mountains. I hated this about ME1. It's just a headache and a waste of time. Mountains and hills are fine, but there were times when I couldn’t figure out where to go or how to get up a mountain.
  • I wish the other Ryder twin would have played a more significant role. It would have been neat to interchangeably play with both siblings. But the other twin just spent the majority of the game resting. It almost reminded me of Mass Effect 3. I couldn’t wait for Shepard's love interest (in my case, Ashley) to join him again. But Ashley almost got beaten to death on Mars and spent a significant amount of time in the hospital. That really sucked to say the least.
  • I have only played multiplayer a few times (not enough to provide adequate feedback). But I can definitely say that for the few times I played, it was buggy and the connection was jumpy and slow.

Here are some of the BUGS I encountered so far:

  1. bouncy companions
  2. black widow didn’t work (I kept shooting enemies, but their health bars would not budge)
  3. sometimes stuck near enemies and couldn’t save or fast travel
  4. missing enemies but there is a red dot
  5. enemies, items, NPCs, etc. rapidly spawned
  6. I still cannot develop improved shield regeneration for the Nomad in research center

Thank you for reading my feedback.
