Mako health not replenishing when going back to Normandy

In the original ME1, if you went down to a planet and the mako got damaged you could go back to the Normandy and drop back down and the Mako would be fixed (which makes sense - the technitians in the Normandy would hardly send you down to a planet in a broken Mako). Well, I just dropped down on Trebin and the Mako got shot up in a firefight (because the enemies figured that shooting straight through it was the best way to get to me and my squad, for some reason) to the point where it was on fire, so I figured that I better return to the Normandy to have it repaired. But when I dropped down again the Mako was still on fire. This really didn't make any sense.

But I figured maybe it's because I just jumped into the Normandy and then jumped back out again, so I went to another planet I'd already visited and got out there. Now the Mako had full health, as expected. Then I got back to Trebin and jumped out - the Mako was now on fire again. It seems the health is tied to the planet itself. I guess it makes sense from a game perspective that ruining your mako is punished by forcing the player to use omni-gel to repair it, but logically this is just preposterous.

(I went across several star systems and came back and the Mako is still burning? Well, that makes sense if the tehnicians set it on fire before sending me down to the planet in it - possibly as payback for me getting it shot up in the first place.)
