ME2 & ME3 Won't Launch but ME1 Worked Fine

Managed to completed ME1 with no issues, but whenever I "launch" ME2 or ME3, the screen goes black briefly, before booting me back into the game launcher.

  • I have reinstalled the game and Origin 3 times (how I have the patience to download 300GB worth of data, god knows)
  • I have verified integrity of cache several times (in Steam directly, Origin's repair just launches the Steam verify)
  • I have cleared Origin's cache several times by deleting the specified folders.
  • I have changed the windows region to use the Beta option (windows user name has only English characters)
  • I have switched to the AutoHotKey launcher
  • I have tried a clean boot (didn't work)

The only time I managed to launch ME2 & ME3 was whilst I was in Safe Boot (Networking). After returning to the normal mode, I removed the Graphics driver and tried the game again, same issue. I then reinstalled the Graphics driver, again same issue. I repeated this process with the Audio drivers and still the same issues persists.

I can't figure out what specifically is preventing ME2 & ME3 from launching.

@XenoShark_UK  The new crashes in your dxdiag, all ten of them, mention a component of Gedosato, which I had to google, but it would make sense that a tool like this could interfere with a particular game.  If deactivating it doesn't help, please remove it from your computer entirely, as in, delete the associated folder(s).  If you can't do that, restart your computer, don't open any apps at all, and try again.

  • @XenoShark_UK  You can try this workaround:

    https://answers.ea.com/t5/Mass-Effect-Legendary-Edition/Mass-Effect-Legendary-Edition-on-Origin-does-not-start/m-p/10341661#M1785

Your CPU shouldn't be affected, as it supports AVX, but a few players have reported it helped anyway.

If that doesn't make a difference, please try playing in a clean boot again, except this time, go through the Task Manager's background processes list and shut down everything nonessential.  Some programs, anything form MSI Afterburner to RGB control software, don't get disabled in a clean boot.  If you use a third-party antivirus, disable that as well, at least long enough to test.

Please also let me know whether ME1 is currently working.

    @puzzlezaddict Appreciate the reply.

I've done another clean boot and checked background process for nonessentials but I only see windows specific process (no idea what they all do mind). I've taken a snippet of what I see in the task manage. I tried the game again, kept an eye on the Task Manager for any sus process (nothing changes except Origin + Steam) but still no luck launching ME2. Although the game now seems to register in the Task Manager before immediately closing.

@XenoShark_UK  Yeah, there's nothing suspicious in your Task Manager.  Does ME1 still work?  The reason I ask is that if something on your system changed, or perhaps you patched after finishing ME1, it's possible that none of the games can load at all.  That would point in a different direction than if ME1 loads but not the others.

I'm still curious whether the AVX workaround helps you, as it does for some players who shouldn't need it.  But if it doesn't, the next thing to try is to delete the contents of the config folder here:

    [install location]\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME2\BioGame

Do the same with for ME3\BioGame.

If that doesn't help, please let me know if you have any idea what TurnUpUpdater.exe might belong to.  Even google doesn't appear to know what it is.  If you don't know either, try searching your system for the .exe and post the file path here.

Please also run a couple of basic checks on your Windows system files:

    • Hit Windows key-X
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered
    • Inside the window that appears, copy and paste “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key-X again
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator)”
    • Inside the window, copy and paste “sfc /scannow” without quotes into the window, and enter
    • Post the message you receive here

@puzzlezaddict ME1 still launches fine, no change when trying ME2/3 after.

I've deleted the config files inside ME2 (there weren't any in ME3), still no change and the files don't get recreated.

TurnUpUpdater.exe is a peripheral software for an external audio device, I have since uninstalled that software (after my initial post) so can safely say it's not impacting the game. I've included an updated DxDiag file.

Ran the windows commands, no error were reported (included snippet)

@puzzlezaddict I WANT TO HUG YOU!

I uninstalled that "software" ages ago at least, I thought I did. Did a through clearing and everything is now running smoothly, thank you.
