Re: [PC] Possible workarounds for Mass Effect Legendary Edition launch problems.

@holger1405 Attached is the DxDiag file you mentioned.

As a reminder, this issue is on my sister's PC; she does not have an AVX CPU. When using the custom launcher (launched via Steam or Origin) and clicking Mass Effect 1, we get the splash screen (the original ME1 logo) and a spinning circle, but the game never loads (even after two+ hours). On task manager, it says that Mass Effect Legendary Edition is not responding.

She is able to play many other games on her PC, including The Sims 4 (via Origin) and even Cyberpunk 2077 (which she plays at low settings).

The error code points to missing files inside Windows but could also be triggered by a hardware error.

This CPU however is really old, has only two cores and is clearly under the minimum system regiments for the game. Meaning this problem might not be solvable.

    • Hit Windows key and X.
    • Choose either “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command prompt (Administrator),” whichever option is offered.
    • Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Checkhealth” without quotes. > ENTER.
    • If errors are found, notify us. If no errors were found reaped steps 1 & 2.
    • Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth” without quotes. > ENTER.
    • The system will start validating soon. If it throws an error, please list it here.
    • After it reaches 100%, hit Windows key and X again.
    • Again, choose “PowerShell (Administrator)” or “Command Prompt (Administrator)”
    • Inside the PowerShell or CMD, enter “sfc /scannow” without quotes. >ENTER.
    • Post the message you receive at the end of the processes here.

    • Make sure Origin and Steam are closed.
    • Delete the "bink2w64.dll" and the "MassEffect1.exe" from under "D:\Steam\steamapps\common\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\Game\ME1\Binaries\Win64"
    • Start Steam > In the library it should say "Download" now > click it. (Stem should only download the missing files and verify the rest of the files again.
    • Test.

    The UOTrace is fine.

Make sure Origin and Steam are completely closed.

    Clear your temp files:

        • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time
        • Into the new window, type or copy & paste:  "%temp%"   (Without the quotes.) > hit "ENTER"
        • Now your Windows Explorer should have brought you to the "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Local\Temp" folder. > Delete all files and folders in it.
(If some files or folders can't be deleted, reboot and try again.)
    • Try to clear your Origin cache.
All settings in Origin (only in Origin not in the games) are back to default settings after this.

        • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
        • Type or copy and paste "%ProgramData%/Origin" (without quotes) into the new window > hit ENTER
        • Delete all the files and folders in the Origin folder, except for the "LocalContent" folder.
(The "LocalContent" folder must remain untouched.)
        • Delete the "Mass Effect legendary Edition " folder inside the "LocalContent" folder.
        • Press the Windows key and "R" at the same time.
        • Type or copy and paste "%AppData%" (without quotes) into the new window > hit ENTER
        • Now your Windows explorer should have brought you to your "C:\Users\>your user name<\AppData\Roaming" folder.
        • Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the "Roaming" folder.
        • In the address bar of your Windows explorer click on "AppData".
        • Open the "Local" folder.
        • Delete the "Origin"  folder inside the  "Local" folder.

You might have a problem with the Origin (Steam, Discord) Overlay.
    Try to disable them.

@holger1405 Dumped and re-verified the files. Unfortunately no luck.
I also disabled Avast before re-verifying and running to make sure nothing was getting blocked. Error message seems the same:

    Hi.

The mass effect legendery wont open at all. When starting it it steam it says starting. origin opens (sometimes) and it then closes itself.

Ive tried the unicode solution, restarted the computer, but issue persist.

Ive tried to turn of windows defender, but issue still persist.

Ive also updated the graphics driver and restarted, but issue still persist.

Ive checked the crash dump folder, and there are several crashdumps there.

Any clue what the next steps is?

Create a DxDiag in text file format and post it with your next reply. You can do that  with the "Choose file" button at the bottom right corner of the reply window.

    @swvenom37

The "igo64.dll" (Origin overly) and the "gameoverlayrenderer64.dll" (Steam overlay) are still loaded in this dump files.

But the module that is responsible for the Null Pointer Read is the "bink2w64.dll". (Responsible as in the module that accessing the blocked Ram area, not necessary the module that is at fault)

That is a Game DLL and we already tried to repair that.

    • Make sure Origin and Steam are completely closed.
    • Go to your ">Drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Origin" folder and rename the igo64.dll to Old_igo64.dll.
(This should disable the Origin overly completely.)
    • Go to your ">Drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Steam" folder rename the  GameOverlayRenderer64.dll to Old_GameOverlayRenderer64.dll
    • Restart the PC >  Test.

    If that don't helps:

    • Please preform a clean boot and test the Game in clean boot mode.
    • Make sure your virus scanner and other security software and also Afterburner and similar software is disabled.
    • Make also sure that your GPU & CPU are not overclocked.

@holger1405 Thanks for the suggestions. Renamed the dll files and rebooted and still have the same issue. Tried the clean boot method but no go on any of the games. AV is disabled, not overclocking CPU or GPU. Here's the latest crash dump info:

Dumb question. Think there's any issue of me having steam on my D: drive and Origin on C:? I've played other steam/origin linked games without problems this way. Probably not the issue but I'm desperate to find any solution at this point. Thanks.

    Not that dump. 🙂

It happens, I don't think it is the reason here, but I can't be sure.

    Besides that:

    • Go to your ">drive<:\Program Files (x86)\Origin Games\Mass Effect Legendary Edition\__Installer\vc\vc2015\redist" folder.
    • Run the "vc_redist.x64.exe" as administrator. (Right click on the exe > Run as administrator.)
    • Restart the computer.
    • Run the "vc_redist.x86.exe" as administrator. (Right click on the exe > Run as administrator.)
    • Restart the computer.
    • Test.

If you get an error that says that another version of the vc_redist is already installed:

    • Go here.
    • Download the "vc_redist.x86.exe" and the "vc_redist.x64.exe"
    • Run the "vc_redist.x86.exe" as administrator. (Right click on the exe > Run as administrator.)
    • Restart the computer.
    • Run the "vc_redist.x64.exe" as administrator. (Right click on the exe > Run as administrator.)
    • Restart the computer.

@holger1405 re-installed the the files but still getting the same issue. For the heck of it I uninstalled and re-installed Origin on D: but that didn't fix it. The game is stubborn, I'll give it that.

Please look at this post and try the game in Save boot mode.

    @Firealkon

    Try to repair the game.

(Origin > Game Library > right click ME3 > Repair / in Steam > right click at MEA > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game cache)
(Steam > right click at ME3 > Properties > Local Files > Verify integrity of game cache.)

@holger1405 Good news. I was able to launch all three games in safe mode. Obviously not playable in that state but progress. I'm going to completely re-install the vid drivers again. This time completely remove everything and have a fresh install. If that doesn't work, I'll try my sound card. Several people mentioned issues with onboard audio and I have a spare dedicated Soundblaster sound card lying around so I'll try that instead of the current onboard setup and see if I have any success. I'll keep you updated. Thanks.

    Hi again, Holger!

I ran through all of the steps you outlined (except the last, I don't use EA Desktop), but nothing has changed.  I still get the message from EA stating I am not connected to the internet, and that I must connect in order to activate my game on this computer using my EA account.  Any other potential solutions?

In a different game, I notice I can no longer connect to in-game multiplayer menus used to browse games to join.  Possibly related?  I've tried running ME:LE after I turned off all AV and firewalls with no success.  Are there other ports that these two games may share that are not open?  EA customer service had me open 80, 443, and 8080.  Thanks for your tenacity!
