Creative solutions for LT/L2-pivoting without breaking Vision Control
I appreciate the transparency, Aljo. I understand that a hard fix for the pivoting mechanic might interfere with the core of Vision Control, but the community is looking for a balance that penalizes 'puck ragging' and unnatural movement without removing the manual backskate entirely.
If a mechanical overhaul is too risky for the current engine, why not implement logical attribute penalties to discourage the exploit? Here are three professional-grade suggestions that wouldn't 'break' pivoting:
Stamina Drain Penalty: Increase the stamina consumption significantly when a player is holding LT/L2 while moving toward the offensive zone or circling back. If someone 'rags' the puck using backskate, their player should be gassed within seconds, making them prone to losing the puck.
Puck Control Scaling: Implement a temporary 'Puck Control' attribute penalty while the LT/L2 modifier is active. Holding a player's back to a defender should make the puck much more susceptible to poke checks and incidental contact. It shouldn't be a 'shield' that makes the puck magnetic.
Passing & Shooting Accuracy Nerf: In real hockey, it is incredibly difficult to fire a precise pass or a powerful shot while moving at high speeds in a backskate transition. If a player attempts a play while pivoting unnaturally, the accuracy and power should drop by 30–50%.
These changes wouldn't require a rewrite of the skating engine; they would simply tune the existing 'Risk vs. Reward' balance. Currently, there is all reward and zero risk for LT-abuse. We need to make sure that manual pivoting is a tool for elite positioning, not a glitch for invincibility.
