The content updating message is intentional. It's not a bug.
How is your game unplayable? Are you disconnecting or lagging?
I added a bunch of commentary in my original post. Before 3-4 weeks ago, the game felt great, no issues. Then something happened where my players stamina dies instantly even at beginning of periods or at the beginning of their shift, my goalie does not move on any deke move, skaters have their "ankles broken" animation every stop/start even at beginning of shifts/periods (like it usually does only when players are using Ankle Breaker or my player is at the end of a long shift), loose pucks seem to glitch and ends up back on opponents sticks, goalie will not tie up a loose puck in front of net, passes from my players to another of my players miss by a mile again even at beginning of shifts or wide open. It almost feels like there is some bug in my gameplay that puts me immediately to gameplay as if it were the end of a long shift (with the loss of stamina and all of the animations that are supposed to be tied to players at the end of their shifts) and am showing that "Content Updating" error message every menu switch or as I enter into games and assuming the two are related. It is in ranked games, when playing Cup Chase, when doing Moments, its all gameplay.

The only changes to gameplay are the ones listed in the notes for each patch.
The content updating notice is not a bug and is unrelated to gameplay.
