I think they just need to buff up the plants team as a whole. The original plants were all designed on very open maps with the enemy being seen way in advance, or much further. The zombies on the other hand were always capable of dealing out damage once they got in range. These new maps have allowed the zombies to dominate because of poor adjustment to the new maps.
You know how fast the standard imp can dump his 35 rounds? I clocked it at 2.65 on my stopwatch. Do you know what it takes a vamp sunflower to do the same? 7.09 seconds. Takes the normal flower 6.6 seconds to dump 35 shots. Mob Corn? 5+ seconds.... The imp can actually win a straight shoot out, no movement against any Rose or Sunflower. I dare the devs to actually test something like that. And then they went ahead and made him small, and able to change direction midair, and the hardest to hit, and give him as much life as a vamp flower...Ridiculous.
So in a game where cover is abound, and by the time you're face to face, whoever has the burst damage wins out. Guess who that is by a mile? The Zoologist can dump 9 shotgun shots in 3.21 seconds... 9! At 30 per piece that's 270 damage! Being a sunflower, a rose, a peashooter you're actually dead in a second. 1 second with 100 life. You know how much damage a plant can do in 1 second? About a quarter of the opponents life.
There is a hedge or obstacle to hide around every 2 feet. There is no traversing in wide open areas in this game, where the plants can actually fight the way they were originally designed too. The devs made a massive mistake in refusing to adjust times with the new maps. And it's why scientists can run around killing a party of 3 before it even knew what hit them. Everyone talks about oh, the rose is a support class, it shouldn't deal damage. Well so is the scientist, and he hits like a truck.... Don't give me the excuse oh he's so close ranged. This game is designed to be a close ranged battle. His teleport allows him to go straight from a hedge to you, and you lose because there's no way you can burst him faster than he bursts you. I'm annoyed at the lack of attention the devs put into this game.
Your math and timing is off. Using a stop watch also I clock the stock Imp at 3 seconds for a clip of 35. That's 5 dmg per body shot, at 3 seconds. 5x35/3= 58.3 DPS. Rounding up from 11.6, that's roughly 12 shots a second.
Stock Sunflower and stock Rose both clock in at 40 DPS.
Imp has 75 hps
Rose has 100 hps
Sunflower has 100 hps
It takes the Imp just under 2 seconds to kill a 100 hp Rose/Sunflower. However, it takes Rose and Sunflower just under 2 seconds to kill a 75 hp Imp. So, they are about as even as even can get.
Again, those are stock versions, once you get into variants, you're talking DoTs, charge shots and such that make the math harder to track, and frankly, I don't want to do the math for every variant out there and I don't personally have every variant yet. .
You also need to recheck your math/timing on the Zoologists rate of fire. I have his clip right at 4 seconds (timing it 10 times and averaging it out).
Granted though, the variants tend to all have higher dps than their stock versions. People still tend to under-estimate the dmg that Plants do. For some reason, people see the big numbers of burst, and automatically assume it does more dmg. Stock Scientist, Rose and Sunflower all 3 have the same DPS, and the stock Engineer actually does almost half the DPS of those other 3 for body shots and does 8 less DPS if he gets all head shots.
