Update: I found if you enter another match and wait 15-20 seconds and then leave for the backyard, it will save 90% of the time. It's not a all around fix but it's better than nothing and works. (for me at least)
For Multiplayer, finish the game, let it go to back to the mutiplayer lobby and into the next game. Afterwards once you get into the new mulitplayer game, select a character and wait 15-20 seconds then return to Backyard.
For other modes, try to generally do the same thing with continuing to a new game and waiting a few seconds and then going to Backyard. Like with Ops, once it puts you back into the level select screen after playing a Ops game, choose any level and do the same as multiplayer. I haven't tried it on any modes other than multiplayer but it should work. (I hope)
