farm merge valley coin issue

I have been stuck at 407 coins all week.  I merge coins when i get sets of 5.  I merge them as a set of 5 (no more).   I finished the 2187 coins in the blue book (lower right), clicked on the gift, received the gifts on farm.  I have been making recipes, getting coins on farm. merge when I get 5 of same kind.  I see it float up towards the upper left when crown and coins are. but coins are never added to my total.  am I missing something? after I merge 5 I don't get another pop up like some players said. I do get coins on farm. just when I merge them, they are gone and nothing added to my total.
