General Feedback
Skate is a game that lives near to my heart. I’ve played all of them since their inception, and having a version of it back in any fashion is a blast. I understand this is a beta-ish game at the moment since the full release is months away. So I am still hopeful for many improvements to the game. For one, I’m a bit disappointed with how cartoonish the game is. In my opinion, Skate 1 and 2 in particular felt the most realistic from a gameplay perspective. Those games were responsive, and I think some of that attributes to the graphics. Skate 2 is my favorite of the 3 previous games. It felt like it was modeled after real life, rather than the arcade-style they seem to be going for this time. Tony Hawk, to me, is your arcade version of a skateboarding game. Skate games use to really focus on the realistic feel of the obstacles and landscapes they designed. Skate 2’s map was designed like a realistic city with a suburban area as well as a metro area. This is what always drew me to Skate over Tony Hawk. This game feels like they’re trying to compete with the latest Tony Hawk game rather than cater to what made those previous Skate games in a different echelon. This game also remind’s me a lot of Rider’s Republic. Solid game, but just gets redundant after a little while. Everything is repeatable and doesn’t have that steez that tricks use to have. Unfortunately, I do think Fortnite plays a role in the change in games as a whole as well, which there is some inspiration with diving off buildings and being able to glide. They’ve spent what feels like an immense amount of time on this game, I really hope this is a shell of what’s to come.
With that said, here are some things I like and some other ideas I have.
- The map dynamic with the way you unlock it is cool. It’s nice that you’re not restricted from the areas you haven’t unlocked. The map isn’t bad, but it does feel the same everywhere you go. Each location doesn’t feel unique like it used to.
- I don’t mind climbing, but it does feel laborious. I like the idea, but needs more thought.
- What happened to the hall of meat? That element was always a blast. Especially with all the large buildings, jumping, and flying; it feels like a hole is missing. Granted, that mode wouldn’t be as fun with cartoony gameplay.
- Someone else had said that board control just doesn’t feel as responsive. Speed feels limited even playing in the rollers and big ramps. The physics just don’t feel realistic at all. Gravity felt like a more real factor in Skate 2, but it feels very artificial in the new game.
- Customization must be limited due to it being the Beta, but the concept is there. I imagine real brands other than Vans will be integrated into it.
Overall, not what I hoped for, but I’ll take it for now. I hope there’s a big enough change to change it back to what it should be like. In my opinion, if they just remastered Skate 2/3 with more add-ons, map expansions, and a higher-level multiplayer interface, this game would crush.
