On the stiffness when turning and lack of “carving”
Usually cruising on a skateboard feels like you’re surfing the ground and even looks like it too. That however isn't the case with the current state of turning in skate. The stiffness of our characters when turning completely prohibits this surfing-like feeling. It is why going downhill through The Isle of Grom streets isn't as fun as it should be or as I had hoped. At all speed levels we feel slow and stiff.
I think that simply letting us use looser trucks wont solve this problem. A bit of hyperbole but it feels as if our character and board literally just rotates through space to turn and face a new direction. As opposed to how a skateboard turns in real life—on a circular/arc radius bc of centripetal force. What makes it so is the fact that our character’s hips are always right above the board, as if we were perpendicularly stuck to it, and so long as this is the case the turning will continue to be unrealistic and painfully slow. Our character’s hips should be leaning off the board and just generally moving more than they currently are when turning. This should allow us to actually skate around / quickly avoid obstacles and feel like we are moving at more than 5 mph. Please look at a video of “carving” on a skateboard— it is a fluid motion done by shifting your body weight and hips to turn in an S-like shape which helps gain or keep momentum. We are currently unable to do this simple motion—the foundation of skateboarding—in the game.
I attached a clip of me turning on skate. and a clip of me turning on session to highlight the difference.
Hopefully we’ll see some changes regarding this in the future of skate. I feel as if this is the one change holding back the realism and speed of the physics while on the board. While I’m here I’d like to mention that reworking the camera customization options would also do wonders for the game—perhaps some options to freely choose the position and rotation of the camera when skating or some new creative dynamic camera angles or follow options.
Thank you!
