BLUESCREEN DPC WATCHDOG ERROR WHEN TRYING DIRECTX 12 ON SETTING

Product: Star Wars Battlefront II
Platform:PC
What is your issue related to? General
Summarize your bug when setting up graphics options, since my geforce gtx 960m 2g gddr5 card can handle dx 12 i selected it BEFORE i saw the warning it was not supported. i quit and restarted and the laptop (Asus ROG gl552vw) froze up. task manager showed system interrupts using 100%cpu before i got a bluescreen restart/recovery of windows 10. starting the game again reproduced the freezing and i had to hard turn off the laptop before it bluescreened again. unfortunately i had to recover the use of the game by deleting the game folder in documents as a workaround to get access to the game again.
What is your gamertag/PSN ID/EA Account name? EA ACC. YODAJEDIFISHMSTR
How often does the bug occur? Every time (100%)
Can you tell us the date (MM/DD/YYYY) that you saw the bug? 11/17/17
What time did you see the bug? (HH:MM AM/PM) MIDNIGHT
In what game mode did the bug occur? Campaign
What is your time zone? GMT (UTC)
Steps: How can we find the bug ourselves? 1. GET ASUS ROG GL552VW LAPTOP WITH WIN 10 64BIT. 2. SET DIRECTX12 ON. 3. RESTART GAME. 4. UNRESPONSIVE LAPTOP AND EVENTUAL BLUESCREEN UNLESS HOLD DOWN POWER OFF UNTIL IT TURNS OFF.
What happens when the bug occurs? YOU CANNOT DO ANYTHING EXCEPT POWER DOWN BEFORE IT BLUESCREENS, OR WAIT UNTIL IT BLUESCREENS AND WINDOWS 10 DOES THE ERROR REPORT AND THEN REPAIRS ITSELF.
What do you expect to see? getting past the opening screen if i turn on dx12 with a dx12 capable gpu in the system. even the integrated graphics is dx12.
Please select your region Europe
AMD or Nvidia Model Number Geforce GTX 960M 2gb gddr5

i selected campaign because you do not have an option for 'on starting game with dx 12 enabled.'

the only way to recover the game is to delete the game folder in documents folder so as to force it to run as if first time. then it re adds the folders. i do not know if just deleting the files in settings would work without losing critical data like saved games, since i dont know for sure how it works.

i would recommend disabling dx 12 until you can be certain it cannot damage or make it a lot harder to enable ie force someone to read a warning when they try as for the license agreements or when TOS changes have to be read and agreed to continue.

  • Same here. The system freezes completely every time I try to load the game with DirectX12 being enabled.

It can be fixed by editing the boot options file located in C:\Users\your-username\Documents\STAR WARS Battlefront II\settings and changing "GstRender.EnableDx12 1" to "GstRender.EnableDx12 0" though, you don't have to delete the whole folder.

  • thanks i did consider that but i was worried about permanent damage to my windows 10 installation if it bluescreened again. i would mark your post as accepted solution but its not solving the dx 12 issue. when it can do this to any customers pc or laptop, and unless they have techie know how like us, the game will have to be deleted and redownloaded in order to be playable again, - and they may not realise its the dx 12 setting causing it and repeat the error.

with something that buggy its my opinion it should be disabled in a htfix patch, particularly if they dont plan to work on implementation fully, which im guessing from the info on the setting they dont plan on at least with this game.

    Yes, that's totally true.
At least they tell you about it being able to cause instability in the description...
Nevertheless I also think that this is something that definetly has to be fixed or even removed at all if that's not possible. Even more so since it already got reported several times during the BETA and even the ALPHA test!
