Terminology is very important. We are outside the Star Wars universe looking in, so it is wrong to push one sides negative perspective of another in this game when we're expected to play both sides.
The faction currently called "Separatists" is named incorrectly. This is a very derogatory term used by the Republic to make their opponent look bad. Yes some planetary systems left the Republic, rallied together and formed their own government. Yes this technically makes them separatists from the Republics point of view; but these "separatists" don't call themselves that. Why would they when it has such negative connotations. They needed to bring some legitimacy to their existence... and they did by calling themselves the "Confederacy of Independent Systems" or CIS for short. This is their official name. We must respect that and refer to them accordingly.
The Clone Wars TV series referring to the CIS as "Separatists" in most episodes is not justification. That story was told from the Republic's point of view. Also I suspect they were reluctant to use the term "confederacy" frequently in a television show targeted at children in the United States because it would upset certain people.
