Star Cards provide too much advantage

Just putting this out there so the Dev's might see it and think on it a bit.

I believe the Star Card system as it is implemented alienates casual players.  I just had a daughter, I don't have time to sit and grind out max levels and max star card tiers.  This wouldn't be a problem if the Star Cards provided different ways to play your class rather than flat bonuses.  Giving flat bonuses without some sort of penalty just screws over the people who don't have time to sink into grinding to higher levels... and even then, there's the grind to either hopefully get it in one of hundreds of loot boxes or to get the materials to craft the card up to the top tier.  I understand progression unlocking things for the class, and that's not a problem... but when that unlock is a flat damage increase, or damage reduction, or even turn speed radius on a starfighter, that is simply too much of an advantage as it provides you a built in handicap vs newer players.  If you're bad, you still have one up on new players, and if your even semi-competent, new players are in for a hell of a bad time.  I've been playing shooters since the early 90s, so I'm used to people being better than me when I start a new game up... but when in addition to having played longer to know tricks and whatnot they also get the advantage of flat stat increases... it becomes like getting dropped into an arena match on an MMO as a level 1 vs a level 50.

So that I'm not seen to be bitching about a problem without thinking about a solution, why would these Star Cards not provide the same progression as any other multiplayer game should?  Yes, some unlocks end up being pretty powerful but generally at a cost.  Star Cards should change how you play your character, not simply make the character objectively better than somebody who does not have the same card unlocked.  If you are going to increase damage, there should be a direct penalty to something like move speed or max health... same with the inverse, decreased damage for increased speed / health.  Increase turn radius, decrease hull value.  Increase starfighter damage, increase heat generated.  Allow the tiers of the card to change the amount by which these bonuses and penalties affect kits and allow players to choose which tier you want to use (ie white +5% damage, -5% health and purple +20% damage, -20% health).   It should not simply grant you unhindered benefits.  This would give you a distinct feel to how your character plays without giving you an unfair advantage over a lower level player.  The cards that replace abilities with other abilities are GREAT functions for star cards, but the Card level itself is a detriment as it increases the efficiency of said card in an unfair manner.  It's the same concept of guns being unlocked being balanced by their multitude of stats, a high powered rifle wont have as high of a rate of fire as a lower damage smg.  What we should be looking for is equality between players using different stat cards being achieved through proportionally lowering stats when buffing up others.

At this time I have returned the game, as I can't justify spending the little time I have to play games nowadays getting shot to pieces by people who have already hit high levels during the pre-release period.  I truly hope some major changes come to the Star Card system, because I think this game has massive potential and I would love to play it.  Best of luck to everyone sticking around!

In war there are privates and there are generals.

But to be serious it is way too late to rehaul the system. And progression is a legitimate way to keep your player base engaged.

Honestly, it isn’t that hard to grind enough crafting points to set your favorite soldiers up the way you want. There are plenty of achievements that can be done in just a couple matches and there is the campaign and arcade mode that pays out fairly well.

If you want to set up all the heroes and all vehicles then yes you are going to have to grind, but if you can be content to be a grunt on the ground you can setup your character in just a handful of hours.

The battlefront series has ALWAYS been this way. The original is no exception.

If you don’t like the progression system you should find a different series to play rather than changing a series with a following to accommodate you
  • "too late to rehaul the system" -I am not so sure  @Peligrad . Not in terms of implementation, but it may annoy some people though. That sort of stuff tends to be defined in script files so design but no real recoding is required. I think all of that could easily be done with little effort.

The following video which I also posted somewhere obscure says that what seems to be a credible EA insider states that the preasure is really effecting EA and they are planning reworking the microtransaction system to be either only cosmetic based or cosmetic+cards but no gambling. So we may get most progression stuff earnt in game. The video is pretty long but you just need to watch from 24 mins 30 secs until 29 mins:

As Micheal Jackson the "king of pop" and aleged  kiddy fiddler said "If you wanna make the world a better game take a look at yourself EA and make that change.........wwwoooooooooaaa!!!!!"

Disney definitely put the screws to them but after the movie launch next month Disney isn’t going to care anymore. This was all about protecting the Star Wars brand. EA isn’t breaking under the pressure of the gamers. If they cared what gamers thought of them they would have changed their policies a long time ago. They have series that have a faithful following regardless of their cash grab tactics and they know it. Mark my words, a month after the movie releases micro transactions come back the way they were. And by then it is old news and no one cares anymore
  • Consider that the audience Disney really want to get invested in their newly aquired franchise is not the over 30's but younger people. They are the future of the business. If loot boxes become regulated as gambling by government then anyone under 21 in the USA would not be able to play EA games. EA would have excluded the demographic that Disney most want to capture from all Star Wars games. If EA dont remove gambling then Disney may take away EAs "exclusive" right to make Star Wars games. Years ago Disney withdrew from a promotional deal with McDonalds worth 1 billion dollars to Disney cos McDonnalds were starting to be associated with childhood obesity and that is not good for Disneys child friendly image. Being associated with child gambling is worse. I doubt the fuss will end after The Last Jedi. EA dont care about gamers but they do care about Disney. So far Belgium, Sweden, France and the UK are looking into whether loot boxes are gambling. If one decide yes they will push for it in the entire EU, Belgium have already stated that intent. Hamaii have already decided it is gambling and are consulting with other states so many of then will fall too.

If EA are forced to remove loot boxes due to this from BF2 that will set a president for other games and gamer presure.

The whole loot box gambling "debate" is completely asinine.

Similar loot distribution practices have been used for years and years over countless games.

Anyone who knows what they are doing in this game knows that buying a loot box is not a gamble.

You will always get crafting parts. Crafting parts are all that really matter.

The occasional blue card reward that you get out of loot boxes barely mean anything unless you are new to the game. You have about a 1 in 5 chance of that blue card being even usable.

You earn credits to get loot boxes to get crafting parts to upgrade specific cards. The only part that is uncertain about the loot box is how many credits you will be reimbursed for the duplicates which determines how many credits you must grind before your next loot box.

  • Loot boxes have been around for years. But only recently have they come to the attention of the general public and governments. Many governments have just started investigating the legalities. Hence things may. Ill comment no further, we are going around in circles.

You might want to play the first SWBF from two years ago. It had the perfect star card system for the “casual player.” Unfortunately everyone complained. And now, we’re stuck with the current system. I agree as a grown adult with responsibilities, this progression system is too robust and time consuming. Needless to say, I have been somewhat disappointed at this game.

Again, you don't need to play very much to get decent cards for the things you play.

The way the game is setup, you get a large dump of resources for achievements early on. The first tiers of cards are very cheap.

You can easily get your favorite character tuned up with 3 tier 3 cards within 10 hours of playing.

It's getting the tier 4 cards that is a huge pain. There are maybe 12 tier 4 cards in the game that are really worth the effort.

The majority of the cards just shave off a second or two off a cool down which probably won't be noticed in most cases anyway.

The gun grinds are honestly where the biggest advantages are to be found, not the cards... and I don't hear people complaining about the gun grinds strangely enough.
