POV Camera Options for non-VR players

First off, this game is great! Thanks for bringing a true Star Wars flight game back to the mainstream! As a former X-Wing, Tie Fighter, XvT, and X-wing Alliance player and real life military pilot, this game is a wish come true!

The game really needs a few added POV camera options, however, to increase situational awareness. There are extra button that can be long-pressed (perhaps the A button on Xbox) on the mapping to open a camera menu (similar to targeting and emoting) to give non-VR players some camera options.

For example...

*Long Press A*
Up-radial Option: Lock POV on current target (simulates head tracking).

Down-radial Option: Lock POV over your shoulder (behind you).

Left-radial Option: Lock POV on nearest incoming missile (would help in evading).

Right-radial Option: Lock POV on Vanguard/Titan One (facilitate formation flight and provide all squad members with a bug-out vector so long as squad leader is alive).

The moving space dust would keep players aware of their orientation but, once in a locked POV or free-look mode, a small ship orientation arrow should display in the bottom corner. This orientation indicator could be turned off in instruments only mode, or individually in the menu.

VR players have a significant advantage over non-VR players, especially with cross-play. These basic options would increase situational awareness dramatically and help balance the playing field.

Thanks again for getting me back into an X-wing!

  • @StrykerMojo Also, another option would be to change the left trigger to Look Lock, and move the original left trigger function to the A button when a target is within your reticle.

I would say No to the missile Lock as it gives advantage over the VR Players (im all die Track IR and free Look), but the other ideas are pretty welcome as they are adding to the fun of the Player.

  • @nazradu That makes sense, I can definitely see that. I think that VR players’ ability to look freely for threats is very difficult to overcome for non-VR players. Thanks for your feedback!

@StrykerMojo Yep, but everything else sets players on par, so pretty good ideas. I realy hope that this game gets some improvements. Otherwise it will die out pretty soon. Its a shame that it has so many technical draw backs, cause in it's core this could be an awesome Game.
  • @nazradu I suppose we don’t need to fill every direction with a camera option. I haven’t played VR for this game, but are you able to lean forward and back in the cockpit with a headset in this game? Maybe long-pressing A and selecting left could be used to give you a slight lean forward/zoom effect? Would work in VR as well and allow you to perhaps see things a little better? There’s a similar feature in games like War Thunder and other flight sims.

If nothing else in this post gets implemented, the look lock is the most important thing Motive could do to improve this game for non-VR players from a camera standpoint. X-wing Alliance had POV target look lock and that game is over 20 years old.
  • @nazradu Has anyone cracked how to use trackir and keep control of the craft? Besides quick look.
  • @Than4t05 I’ve unfortunately never used TrackIR. There was a similar function when the Xbox One was new that used the Kinect to track your head movements. Even being able to track head movements slightly would be better than having your eyes glued straight ahead during a dogfight. It’s madness.
