Star Wars Squadrons Disappointment

Having been an avid player of Battlefront II's Starfighter Assault, I waited excitedly for Star Wars Squadrons, but I'm massively disappointed. Basically, I was hoping for more of the same as Starfighter Assault, e.g. 3rd person view, intuitive and clear controls, great graphics, and excellent ship piloting/handling dynamics. Sadly, this isn't the case. I find the locked 1st person view makes things difficult, the controls are clunky, ship handling is dire, and the graphics are just OK (on high settings). I also think it's a very 'thin' game, i.e. there's a dearth of content and modes. I'm struggling to find anything to like about it, apart from the Star Wars thing.

  • @G1lgam3shI understand. its not your fault. they gave you this impression with the title, as they named it after the rouge squadron series rather than the xwing or alliance titles. i mean they wanted to hark after the xwing vs tiefighter series and I feel they were trying to capture the attention of the starfighter and squadron players. If they just did a little better notoriety with the title and named it Alliance Assault there would not had been this confusion. Im sure there will be another rouge squadron starfighters game and it might come from nintendos end.

Yes it seems to be a hybrid of the old X-Wing games, and the Rogue Squadron titles.  I am mostly fine with it though.  You have control over your fighters power transfers etc. but you also have arcade mechanics that the Rogue Squadron titles offered.

I do miss being able to toggle my fire mode at the touch of a button, linked, single, or cross linked, or being able to toggle between ions and standard cannons but understand why they went the route they did.

  • @G1lgam3sh Partially (about 50%) entirely your fault though. Locked 1st person view and only a few modes, maps and ships were clearly communicated months before release. Graphics... well, they're always a matter of taste to some degree, yet expecting high end graphics for a cross-platform game designed for PS4 and XBox-whatever-that-series-is-called was also a fail.
The only legit complaint is about the controls / flight physics, those were advertised way better than they in fact are.
  • This game is best played in VR with HOTAS. It was pitched as the flight sim crowd not 3rd person arcade fans.

  • i believe the only thing they really took from rouge squadrons was the name and better graphics, as squadrons also was planet atmosphere based.  I would like to see how this game fares with such a platform. I understand physics is the big seller here and if they do go planet side i would like to see it called galaxy crews and be a total co op game wee you manage turrets as a crew aboard vanguard cruisers guarding flag ships.  from fighters with ten to twenty on board each ship. this would take place in the old republic era in space and ground  battles. thing is i doubt we will ever get a game with a mix of the rouge squadrons and alliance games, just one or the other do to the intensity of production these corporation have no faith in, even though they sell better than they should for what they put out.

  • I believe the game is good as it is. I mean, I would love to see external flight camera recorders post game if they can so that I can replay some of the great gaming moments here and there..

Having said that, I'm against it having 3rd person view as it would be a huge handicap for those people who prefer to use 1st person view.

This is a semi flight sim game, after all. It is not an arcade shooter. It's amazing they were even able to adapt the power management function of the X-Wing games here.

I think if you're into 3rd person space shooter in the Star Wars universe, Battlefront 2 is still the way to go. This game, however, are for those wanting to immerse themselves in the universe.

PS. Play it with a HOTAS controller and you'll appreciate the control schemes more.

  • I have a suspicion that if this game had 3rd person view the game would probably be a lot easier on Ace difficulty, and a lot easier in MP as well, especially in dogfights.

What would be nice is what XWA had and you can do a free view and close-up of your fighters for screenshots.  In XWA you could even lock the view from whatever angle you wanted.
