Failed to initialize web browser

I have decided to come back to this game after trying other MMO's and none of them have the same magic as SWTOR and STO did back in their time, I have downloaded the installer from the My Account tab on swtor.com and when I install it there is a brief 1 sec window that pops up and I then have had to gid into the install files and find the launcher only to open it and have it say "Failed to initialize web browser". I've tried multiple fixes online and they haven't worked and from what I know the setup file on the website is bugged and there isn't a fix. I'm coming here as a last-ditch effort to get help and fix this issue. Any help is appreciated though it is late when I'm posting this and will probably be at school or asleep when I get a response so sorry if I don't get back to you right away.

Also in your first post you mention the setup file with a bug ?

If you create a game folder where you want the game installed , paste the repair utility at this link into that folder and extract the files

then use launcher.exe and run it as administrator , see if this has any change

Just to confirm you have gone to c:\windows\syswow64 folder to see if a file called libcef.dll exists there ? if it does delete it

Do a wider search for libcef.dll just to be sure , looking for one anywhere in a global file path.

Do you use any configuration scripts with chrome at all ?

I see libcef.dll come up for Steam games, Blizzard games, League, EPIC Games, Ubisoft games, Discord, Spotify etc. but nothing for SWTOR. As far as "configuration scripts" I'm not that familiar with programming and I don't know what that is or how I would enable/disable it.

    Great news

To give you some background, libcef.dll is part of the chromium framework and if a different dll version is encountered the failed to initialise web browser error is what occurs.

That dll file is as you found is used by a lot of programs and should be all contained in relevant program folder, sometimes one gets installed elsewhere and can cause issues.

In your case maybe the swtor setup for some reason couldn't place these files in the swtor program folder correctly, luckily the repair utility is just a self extracting archive and simply places the launcher files in the folder.

anyways sounds like your all good now so May The Force Be With You 🙂
