My analogy was all about the league/division system we have now. I believe in the system and to make it work you need to finely hone the divisional balance.
There is your first misconception: there is no finely honing this system, it simply creates endless churn with every player ranking up or down after every match.

So we've been playing for a few months now and have a skill rating bases on our 5v5 performances. Now, we're going to play comparable players (5v5) in 3v3. This will mix up the skill ratings and then we'll go back to 5v5.....
If they want to start again with skill points for 3v3 I wouldn't like it but fine. However to continue into 3v3 using our 5v5 skill points rating, totally mess it up, then go back to 3v3 totally devalues the system we've been working hard to form.
And here is your second misconception: strong players will adapt and continue to prosper while weaker players will continue to struggle. 3v3 will not magically make good players bad or bad players good.
And the rankings churn constantly anyway because that is the way the system was designed.
Reseeding the rankings for 3v3 would actually devalue the system by erasing all progress and taking us back to the same state as the initial 5v5 season, which is most likely why CG doesn't do it after each season as they used to under the old system.
