Except that isn't true. It was very possible for long time players including F2P to 7* Thrawn without spending money. As a F2P I chose to save my resources and settle for 6*.
Show me one that didn't buy shards from shipments (the equivalent of spending money, especially when you have to spend 300 gems in order to do 3x100 refreshes for hera/ezra) or buy packs when phoenix was released. I also got him at 6*. Nobody cares about a 6* thrawn. At all.
I do know one who has been doing nothing but saving crystals. Spent no money and got 7* thrawn. If you are not chasing everything that comes out and burning through crystals they can add up.
