A quick word about software engineers.

Hey guys,

I'm an Android Developer and I'd like to say a few things on behalf of the devs. Let me preface by saying I do not develop games. I work mostly in mobile security. That said, I feel comfortable making these points about software development in general.

1) I see a lot of threads about how the devs are messing the game up. Unfortunately, your anger is likely aimed in the wrong direction. The devs probably have very little to say about who is strong and who is fast. It's more likely they received a task in some project management tool that says. "Add character 'insert characters name'. Use the following stats."

2) They probably care more about the game being liked and played than you might believe. In my experience, developers take their projects very serious. It can be extremely frustrating when a change comes down from the project management team that says to change something you know will not be in the best interest of the project. They may have even argued for countless hours to try and get them to reconsider. But in the end it is not usually a developer's call.

3) You should probably (speculation here) be mad at some project managers or sales people who did some math and figured out if you keep adding new characters with higher speed and higher dps you sell more crystals and bundles. They probably don't even play the game.

4) Those above named individuals likely care very little about what is written in this forum. They could care less if Poe was too fast or if Yoda is too hard to 7*. They care about one thing. Money. This is a business, and I find it very unlikely if anything going on in here strike or boycott wise is going to effect sales enough to deter them from their current plans.

With that said, can we try and relax a little? It is a game. It is fun. It is not perfect, but no game ever is. The meta will change whether is intentional or accidental. Most importantly, if you feel it absolutely necessary to vent, it is probably significantly more annoying to field phone calls to the customer service teams than it is to just ignore these forums. So place an angry phone call instead of polluting the forums we use for strategy and community. Now back to your regularly scheduled ranting.

    Hi @Stevespear426 -

Appreciate you trying to defend our engineers from the rest of the team, but one thing I think you should know is that in game development everyone on the team is a developer, regardless of their discipline.

I know in non-gaming teams "devs" are often only engineers. Cue Steve Balmer's famously hilarious "Developers! Developers! Developers!" YouTube video. (If you haven't seen that, I'll wait...).

However, gaming is different. We all play the game, we all work very closely together, and we all care about the game and the players. All of us... even greedy, evil, manager types like me. :)

    Thanks!
  • Even though the term "dev" is used generically, I think most people here know that whatever issues they may have with the game aren't with the foot-soldiers, but rather with the order-givers. That's how it always is, really. "Dev" is shorthand for everyone involved in the game generally, and, well, providing feedback here is the only option available to us. I agree that it should be provided positively whenever possible, but it should be provided.
In many/most cases, the feedback being ignored hurts them as much as us.
(I'm a former developer and now work in QA. If you think devs get blamed for decisions made by higher-ups that they oppose, try working in QA sometime. :) Software-users don't realize that when products ship in a horrible state or with bugs that sit unfixed for ages.. this is 99% of the time a decision made by management over the objections of the QA team.)
  • I feel that the majority of the people posting here are simply ignorant to how game developing works, and don't really care much about whether their remarks are accurate or not.

If I had any say on this forum, I'd sticky this thread. Maybe it would make at least a few ppl think before posting.

Of all the things you said, this strikes to me with the most truth, not to diminish everything else you said, which you are right on point, but Money trumps ALL.

    Well said. +1

On a scale of 1 to 10, how awesome are the morning meetings that discuss some of these forum topics? I know they exist.... Well If I were in charge they'd totally exist... Be honest!!

I would totally pay crystals to be able to dial-in in listen-only mode on one of the developer calls discussing the forum rants and how to improve the game.
