I don’t fully understand the GP gate. I mean it probably saves a lot of players headaches and it probably pushes a lot of players to develop their rosters. Beyond that it is unnecessary, much like the R5 gate on CRancor.
It would seem the GP gate is there for the reasons you are outlining in your first paragraph.
Locking it behind GP allows them to not have new players get locked behind rosters that get one or 2 teams very fast, in some of the competitive game modes.
It also locks a slower pace for the release structure of Conquest, which also helps them both develop and same above competitive argument.
Just speculation, but sounds reasonable.
