Using his AoE when he gains advantage would eliminate that risk. I actually quite like the risky nature of the ability, but I can see it being problematic on defense. Protection tends to make expose less oh an issue, though.
Gives you an added reason to bring along a debuffer like ackbar, ewok elder, lobot and similar!
