Can We Discuss the Character Models in this Game?

I'd like to have a positive discussion about the character design in this game and gather the thoughts of others.

After the release of Star Wars™: Force Arena I couldn't help but be impressed by the life-like and more realistic look of the character models. I wondered why this game wasn't putting a little more emphasis on the look of the heroes.

For example, just view the difference between the promo art for Young Han versus his in-game model.

I'm not saying it needs to be photo-realistic, but that doesn't even look like Alden Ehrenreich, while the face model for Qi'ra looks like she had an allergic reaction to peanuts.

I thought perhaps high-end graphics was not possible or maybe there was a hardware limitation but after seeing Marvel Strike Force and observing the look and design, the animations, the ragdoll physics, etc... I then come back to this game and can't understand why graphics/realism seem like an afterthought or area of little emphasis.

Now it should be said that there are game models that look excellent! Usually helmeted characters, Droids, or heroes that were puppets/CGI in-film leading me to think this revolves purely around making a convincing likeness.

Is it because the player base doesn't make it a big deal?
Can there feasibly be a design makeover for this game?
Is it just cost prohibitive?

I understand it came out 2 years ago but it really does not hold up well in comparison to more recently released games and a makeover is due.

Just check out a couple screenshot examples of what I'm talking about (if you don't know already).

What are your thoughts about the character design?
Can it even be fixed or improved?

Of course we all have a wish list for other problems, bugs and QoL updates we want, but can this not also be on the table as a future fix?

  • I am sure it depends on royalties and what the license actually entails from Disney Lucas to Ea/CG.

The one factor not considered is this is a phone app, not a full blown Xbox One or home computer. I am pretty certain that certain aspects of the actual game benefit from fluidity of motion vs every frame of movement tracking thousands of pixels of facial features. If you’ve noticed, all the faces look to be overlaying a blank generic flesh tone head. It’s really obvious in both Krenic and Solo. Blizzard does a similar render with WOW and it’s funny to watch when screen tear is involved.

There’s no doubt in my mind it’s Star Wars. The John Williams score and ILM sound effects are the real deal. Pretty sure that’s actually James Earl Jones screaming “nooo” when Vader dies. Wish CLS did Mark’s famous “nooooooo” when he died as well.
  • The little shard icons with characters faces on them have been really bad lately too. Like Qi'ra and young solo they look terrible
  • The graphics in SWGOH are not fantastic.

I recently played a similar game where the graphics were absolutely superb.

    But the gameplay sucked.

I think the gameplay of SWGOH is very good indeed.

    So...

I agree, there are aspects of this game that are way better than others, but does it really need to be a trade-off like that?
