The lack of consistency is indeed a problem in my opinion. There seem to be more and more overlap with factions now, and some factions only have like 5 or 6 characters. Rebels have a ton, and with rebels there are quite a few different eras so it makes no sense. During the clone wars there was a great deal of collaboration with Jedi, and clones, but that has no synergy when Rebels from all these different time periods do. It doesn't make much sense to me.
Kanaan is a Jedi that left the order when Order 66 happened and he felt guilty for fleeing and leaving his master behind (I'm not sure how far along in his training he was though), whom got killed. He rejoined many years later when he began to bond with Ezra, and became his teacher.
