I beg to differ, Qui - their relic investment is rebalanced, but any further resources like crystals or money are lost in the void. I can understand why people are upset and sympathise, though I haven’t been affected by this issue myself as both Ezra and Merrin are G12.

What on earth do you mean by this? Whatever resource went into the relevant relic levels has not been lost in the void if the materials obtained are returned to the player.

Edit - if I invested £50 and 4,000 crystals into taking Merrin and Ezra to r7, and I have the materials that the money / crystals obtained returned to me, why on earth should I expect the money and crystals to also be refunded? Or is this another occasion like the last time?

You are forgetting that they nerfed the characters, ergo the value in materials you get back is not worth the same as when you initally invested in them. The game has changed and getting some materials is easier now than it was, market value of the materials has changed as well.
This is not a simple exchange of getting materials back so you can use them to upgrade the character again because if you do that, you will be left with the two characters at the same relic level but weaker than they were before.
