I was very surprised to find out SM-33 is the next conquest unit, along with the addition of the pirate faction. But why in the Jiminy Christmas on the hood of a baby blue Prius is he dark side?! He's one of the main protagonists, and actively defies the pirate's code to turn against the antagonist after his loyalties were temporarily turned. If not Light Side, he should be Neutral - in fact, Neutral is probably the best depiction of how SM-33 works.

I haven't seen the show, but I want to point out two things from what you said. First, a protagonist is just the person the story revolves around. So Darth Vader, for example, can be a protagonist in a story but is still a villain.
secondly this statement makes me think CG did it correctly "turn against the antagonist after his loyalties were temporarily turned" he went against the antagonsit after he temporarily changed alligence. This sounds more like he is still a dark side person but for whatever happened in the show he was a hero for it. Id love more details on this until I can actually watch the show in the future
Skeleton Crew was wonderful, and you really should watch it. Fern is the next-gen Han Solo, for sure, and is an absolute delight to watch.
Andor is also an excellent show, but not nearly so appropriate for children as the OG SW:ANH that many of us saw as our first SW content. Skeleton Crew manages to be great without being so gritty and political as to be almost exclusively for older teens and adults.
But also, he may work with Aphra for a bit… before pirates come.
Unless Aphra is going to be given the pirate tag as well, there's not a ton of synergy from SM-33's kit. I hadn't thought about that pairing yet though
Not really. He only joined with the antagonist because his programming bound him to the pirate's code, and he definitely wasn't happy about it. When I say he turned against the antagonist, I mean one of the kids "unclaim-sies" Captain Silvo's (antagonist) role as captain. He says "That's not how it works" before SM-33 immediately knocks him unconscious and says "Aye, but it be close enough!"
He definitely shouldn't be dark side.
