Darth bane believed that the power of the dark side is spread too thin between so many sith alive, that is why he made the rule of 2- one to hold the power, the other to crave it. There is ALWAYS looking over the shoulder since the whole idea is for the apprentice to kill the master at one point, and take on the apprentice of his/her own.
