If you mean game design specifically, Computer Science is the most common major, but not actually required depending on your skill set. You should check out free game development tools and mess around on your own to see what you can come up with. I recommend Unity which is a free download. Many professional studios use Unity and it is even included as a recommendation in the jobs listing in these forums.
