On OP's actual topic, I agree, the grind is boring and would argue it is unnecessary. I don't have data to back this up, but most in my neck of the woods pretty much have to do 50-crystal refreshes the duration Conquest, regardless of when we get red crate, because we need DCs to remain competitive. All the feat grind does is prevent me from using the sim tickets they were nice enough to add.
So, these absurd feat grinds must be targeting players that wouldn't grind for DC mats but might spring for a pass or spend more crystals to get the new character: mid-to-late game players, collectors, ... ???
