I don't think they will be able to make it fun without revamping the whole mode. They built is soley around stamina/energy and grind.
Say for example they dropped all feats, made beating the last stage be a red crate and instead you need to leave team behind on certain nodes. E.g., assign a squad that would gathe resources for the remainder of the conquest. Better teams left behind yield better rewards, faster full clear means more resources and then add gathering speed to the passes so the pass buyers get rewards increased. Then tune the difficulty and consumables accordingly.
Now the grind is gone, the challenge of beating it there and and the original wide roster check is there. I'm sure some excell hero at cg can tune the gathering speed, crystals for consumables, and pass bonuses to be in line with current system.
