Daily capital ship blueprints

Plus the monthly events to earn 15 shards to take from 6* to 7*.
Challenges to earn them? I imagine you mean it the other way around, where you need that Cap Ship to DO the challenge.
Nope, up to six stars there are challenges on the days I mentioned to get the blueprints. Once one of the three original capital ships is 6* their challenge disappears from the window where the ability mat, enhancement droids and ship building materials challenges are. They might be named events, but they are in the same window as the challenges on the specific days above.
