Maul was heavily featured in the comic book Son of Dathomir. It went into what happened after Maul had been taken prisoner by Sidious and how he subsequently ended up on his own again.

Anybody who's followed Star Wars for some time would know that the Dark Side is a pathway to abilities some would consider... Unnatural. You can survive pretty much anything as a powerful wielder of the Dark Side. Maul's case is spectacular but by no means extraordinary.
