Down with tournaments

I feel bad because I only post when I have a complaint, and never do when CG does good things. CG, I've been playing since release and this game is pretty sweet and I love 90% of it.

But FFS tournaments make me want to blow my head clean off. Sucking on a lit M-80 sounds more appealing than doing one more tournament. It's a waste of time and most players will never be able to unlock these characters or raise them to a substantial level/number of stars. But... out of a stinking feeling of obligation and feeling like I'm missing out... I'll do these horrific upcoming tournaments.

Ugh.

But ships are cool...

  • tournaments are fun when you try out like 5/6 teams and get some free gear/credits. Unfortunately it always feels like "losing" because the #1 reward is that much better. You get lured into caring, spending more time than you'd like battling the same wiggs teams over and over...
Increased ally point costs, more frequent tournaments, no roster refresh and reduced "up time" to 1 day are all measures taken by the devs to make the tournaments less boring. Ergo, they are listening.
Still don't like tournaments as the main method of releasing new toons though.

Limit the tourney to 1 refresh per char, p2p will win (bigger roster) and f2p wont think to have to waste too much time on it, will keep complaining about p2w but get used to it -> problem solved.

I mean then you might as well do aurodiums again then, which are far better for everyone.

Why? Aurodiums wont give f2p free credits and gear parts!
@OskarWulfgar Like the tournaments are now, I dont think its "whales" winning it ... sure, they have a little advantage because of their bigger roster, but in the end, the guy having the most sparetime, being able to fight the same teams over and over again for 24 hours straight will win ... no matter how much he has spent to the game.

I'm 100% sure aurodiums aren't a better option for me personally. I've unlocked all the characters from tournament except for vader's tie fighter. (f2p, so no aurodiums for me)

The real complaint is that rather than offer a character for sale at a price they lock it out to a select few that can "afford" to win it.
The only way someone "pays to win" a tournament if by having a bigger collection. Isn't this a honest trade off? The event awards those with larger rosters- good on the event design IMO- first of it's kind outside of GW (which isn't really pvp

Everything else you posted I agree with - except the above. The event only rewards those with deep rosters with two huge caveats:
    1) They have purchased or amassed enough AP to outspend all the other people whom they are pitted against on their tournament shard (which itself is dependent on RNG to an extent).
    2) They have several (at least 4-6 hours) on the allotted day to spend them. And those 4-6+ hours need to be near payout time.

Deep rosters can get you on the top 100-200 fairly easily. To hit the "true p2win" area, it's not about roster depth. But I think you know that. ;)
  • My only issue with tournaments is that there is no way to level up the characters that we unlock. So I say either add characters to Hard Nodes/Cantina right after the tournament so people can finish them. Or have more tournaments with the same characters so people can finish them. It looks like they might be going that route with Jyn which I'm fine with but we need a way to finish the characters!

I have had Chirrut for a long time at gear 11 but no way to get him more stars so I basically wasted all that gear.

Also 1 day tournaments are a must! The multiple day tournaments take WAY to much time.
  • If they expanded the rewards a bit more then I think people would enjoy them. Only the top 100 being able to unlock the character is tough. Also instead of giving the character unlock as part of the reward it should be straight shards (like the vader tie tournament). Once you unlock Jyn you are only getting 32 shards for her unlock and not the 80 you got initially.

Based on the up coming tournament schedule, no one in charge is listening. It appears the tournaments are a good revenue stream somehow. Otherwise they would not be running them. I hate them and refuse to spend anymore ally points on them. But I don't see an end coming. Apparently customer feedback is a thing of the past.

It's definitely about money, because everyone said they hated them, and EA responded with what, 6 more in the next month?
Thought it's probably because tournaments also slow down the progress of the game. If you notice, it's been forever since a character was added somewhere other than a cantina node (besides Windu).

I do wonder how they make money off tourneys rather than Aurodiums and chromiums.

Or maybe they just want to keep the whales satisfied for now

They make money not with the tournament alone but lots of people get shards / low star toons, then they bring out some awful shard pack to bait people into buying in the hope they will level up that character to the next level.

This is exactly how they make money off tournaments. It's off the back-end, not the front end. Look how many people bought the packs for Shoretrooper recently to either activate him or star him up.

What is the difference between 1 or 10 resets? Biggest roster wins anyway if you spend the time (and they will because they are forced to). I prefer no resets, just battle it out with the toons you have just like heroic raids.

I think having limited resets is a much better option. Without them the only people that will place highly in the tourney are the whales. At least this way I have a chance every so often of beating them.

If there are limited resets you will never beat a deeper roster. Ever. If you don't have a deeper roster than others, the only way you can win is by having a way to refresh your team(s).

  • As many have rightfully said, tournaments are an easy and relatively cost-less way to get free raid gear and tons of credits and mats. I doubt anyone has serious objections to them on that front.

The real problem most people have is that tournaments make so many new OP toons essentially unavailable. Jyn, Shore, Chirrut, Cassian, and Tie Advanced -- very few people have any hope of unlocking these toons. And these toons are not meh--they are breathtakingly good. If you want proof, find the video of just Jyn, Baze, and Chirrut destroying another maxed out meta team. And even if they do unlock them, there is zero chance of getting them to 7* without paying a huge sum of money for packs. Remember when 320 crystals for 4 shards was considered a hard paywall? That is nothing compared to these new packs. 1200 crystals for maybe, maybe, 2 shore shards? C'mon, seriously? Baze and K2-SO are not tournament toons but are also unavailable or exceedingly difficult to obtain for a sizeable portion of the player base.

All people are really asking for is a little balance. Keep the tournaments. I like free gear and credits. But how about one--just one--very good new toon be made available via a palp or yoda-style event? It won't be a giveaway. You'll need, e.g., 5x7* of a certain faction for a 7*. (One can dream, but with all the new 7* palps coming on line soon, what about requiring an empire team to unlock Jedi Luke or R2D2?) A lot of people will pipe down about the tournaments, if we can get a palpatine-quality toon in a palpatine-style event.

  • They could make it easier with a change that people have been suggesting for arena a lot? Which is to make your rewards based on the highest rank you achieve
