Honestly? I don't think ships were as popular as they expected them to be. Look how many fighters we have vs capital ships. Its not like we can deploy 4 capital ships with a complete compliment of fighters. Personally, I think it boils down to the fact that once the shine wore off of ships, people were not impressed and we had several other things thrown at us too.
