Seems to me like the opponent made a strategic move. If you know you can’t win, but cause your opponent to lose out on credit rewards with your strategy, you’re still improving your standing. Denying other players 700k credits gives you a slight leg up. Even better if you clear out your opponent and get all of the credits yourself.
It's not strategic. It's spiteful.
