You also don't need to wait for lvl 85 to unlock R2 (you go to R2 in the characters list, you tap on the icon were you can search his shards and than you can go to the event and you can participate also without being lvl 85) and the same is true for any other character (excluding malak and gas)

Ok, when i go into R2D2 event. then click the prerequisites it says i need to do a quest and has lvl 85 next to it. So i can still do the R2D2 event once i get the empire to 7*s. I was thinking about lvling storm trooper and snowtrooper just because they are easy to farm in the cantina.
