You can, you get crystals every day sent to your inbox. You don't need to do anything to get them, you just won't get the additional ones for the active GAC.
Okay, solid point, you do get something regardless. Your critique is the most fair so far. I just feel like setting a defense is still participation I didn't just leave it to the AI to set it for me.
This is still A LOT less work (doing one battle) compared to squad arena

I don't understand your complaint, you are getting a daily inflow of crystals, if you do nothing, but you are required to put in a lot less work than squad arena does given your schedule
My thoughts too. 1 battle (win or lose) 3 times per week in a 24 hour window is way less effort than 1-10 (win only) battles daily in a 1-2 hour window. And GAC success isn't so reliant on chasing the Meta (I guess this depends on the bracket), but I've climbed from Aurodium 2 to Kyber 3 with 1 GL (no ult yet).
And there's even a 1-week vacation between GAC events scheduled every 5 weeks.
