How do thermal detonators work?

I don't use them for damage, I place them on rey for the -25% offence, and then randomly on enemies who doesn't have debuffs to let 88 get maximum damage.

I only use JE, and my understanding is that it deals physical damage. All of his special damage stats are irrelevant. It also goes off a turn later than it is supposed to, making it next to useless except for stacking on Old Ben and tanks.

The detonators do a percentage of max health of the target from what I understand... As well as standard attack damage for the initial attack in some cases.

It varies from character to character at least to some extent. Nute's does a significant percentage of health with splash damage vs. a single target... but with the rest of the characters that use them the damage seems pretty consistent... I would speculate around 15%-25% max health of the target. It's hard to gauge now with all the mod craziness now but you could probably boost the "on hit" damage to some extent if you were running a detonator team

Sometimes I have a hard time monitoring there effect in combat. I use Greedo and Mob enforcer and I'm still trying to determine if the turn meter bonus kicks on as soon as the thermals are placed, or after they detonate.

TD deal damage based on targets max health but it also deals physical damage not based on the character but just dealing physical damage so amour also effects it then it also has damage variance just like other attacks. Max health damage increases damage based on max health and increase of damage would be just like a normal damage increase.

Short answer : not very well.

I see them go off when they should, it's the second time the TM is filled after they are placed. Which is one full turn, isn't that when they are supposed to?

While thermals look crappy there're extremely powerful if used right. As it's been said, debuffs for Rey and buff-up safe for ig88. Stack them them on counter enemies like Dooku and Fives. Put one on a character you know will be protected by Royal Guard before damaging them for the kill shot after the taunt goes off. Stack them on the tier 6 Rancor and watch a 16k explosian rock him.

The only things they're NOT good for is immediate damage and if Rex is hanging around. Honestly thermals don't need three checks to land (resistance, dodge, and whatever the other one is) and should just be based on a single stat like dodge. They should be like 88's Leader DOT ability was.
