Is there a run-down of how/what stats/upgrades affect your ships?

Pretty much what the title says. I know gear tiers can affect the ship abilities you can unlock but does it affect the damage or health of a ship?

Do mods play more of a role?

Basically I'm trying to figure out how to best optimize my fleet team in a manner other than "upgrade all the things!"

Literally the only way to optimize your fleet is to upgrade everything. Individual stats on mods have zero effect on ships, only thing that matters is number of dots, and if it's level 15.

Edit: ships(like characters) have max base stats, the only way to achieve them are to 7* both character and ship, get pilot to gear 12, zeta etc. (But wouldn't use a zeta on a pilot solely for the fact that they're a pilot)

The overall power of a pilot is the only character stat that affects the ship's stats. So adding mods, levelling abilities and adding gear does increase the ship's stats. It's not possible to affect single stats like speed or health. It's a simple the pilot gets better, the ship gets better.

On swgoh.gg there is a more detailed explanation in the ship's stat section. On crouchingrancor they have a calculator to determine ship's speed based on the pilots gear/mod/ability levels.

Or you can look at stats of your ship, upgrade your pilot and... wow the stats are changing! Yes it is amazing.

That misses the point, which is to know if it's worth upgrading before you upgrade, not after.

How do you know this?

Try it out. Switch out various mods with same level and number of dots but with different stats. Check your ship stats/GP after each switch. Quite simple, really.

Anything that affects your pilot's crew power affects your ship's stats.
