They didn't flop, though. The only new SW movie that isn't a box office behemoth is Solo.
Maybe flop wasn't the correct word. They made money? But the story sucks. I was trying for a more PC phrase...
The correct phrase would be that you (along with a significant portion of hardcore fans) didn't like the story. I am not a big fan of the new trilogy either, but let's face it, hardcore fans don't make or break a franchise. I would consider Solo a movie for hardcore fans, and it struggles. It's the casuals who bring in the money necessary for a francise to be successful, and the new movies did achieve that. And as long as the main story movies bring enough dough for other projects, I will be ok with them being rather mediocre...
I will admit that the movies should cater to a newer audience, but not at the expense of the fan base. A lot of movies today are all visual effects and no story telling, which jives with the younger crowd. Yes, ANH was cutting edge and developed a lot in the late 70s, but that was a different time, when scifi wasn't popular. It's a shame that production studios are all bottom line and not about masterful story telling. I disagree with you on as long as they're pumping out projects, that mediocrity is acceptable. Sometimes we just need to leave a great franchise alone, let it go, to use a Disney term.
