I picked it up last night. My front line is Vader, Fives, Biggs, Asohka (to dispell any taunts I don't like), and Imperial Tie Fighter Pilot. I use Mace. My reinforcements are Fett, FOTP, and Wedge.
With the exception of Asohka, all my starting crew either inflict target lock reliably (Vader and Five's special), or have a chance to on their basic (Biggs and TFP). They all have secondary useful skills -- Vader keeps the target locks on, Biggs starts taunting, Fives can dispel anyone who is target locked, Asohka obviously dispells, and TFP can inflict buff immunity on a TL enemy (great for right before the opposing Ackbar ship uses its special). Also, TFP is a dodge machine who gives turn meter to Mace.
And Mace is key to this setup for three reasons:
1) He can make Fives taunt, to even out the inevitable assault against Biggs, and also when Biggs gets dispelled by the enemy Asohka.
2) His red-blast special hits the target plus all other target locked enemies. By the time he first goes, I've usually got 2 people target locked (Vader and Fives), maybe 3 or 4 (if Biggs crits or TFP procs on his basic). This special then gives everyone Valor which feeds Mace turn meter and reduces cooldown on his invincibility ultimate, and here's the biggie: Mace's cooldown on this skill is 4, but it's reduced by 1 for each enemy struck. Which means if you have 2 target-locked people and aim at a third, it's ready by the next turn. So you can keep spamming this skill, keeping Valor up (which also helps because Asohka can trade it for protection recovery with her crew skill).
3) And then obviously, invincibility. I can usually get Mace so much turn meter and cooldown reduction with the special/Valor spamming that I can use invincibility TWICE before the enemy Ackbar or Tarkin does his ultimate.
And then my reinforcements have some obvious synergies:
1) FOTP can fly right in and use his special on a TL enemy and almost always kill someone off. And since Vader is spamming TL, FOTP's cooldown always resets and so he's almost always hitting hard hard hard.
2) Wedge can fly in and use his special, which hits harder with debuffs (such as Target lock! and Fives will occasionally stick Off/Def Down on) and is almost always a guaranteed kill if the enemy isn't at full health/prot.
3) Fett's special hits all TL enemies like Mace's does, and it can inflict ability block, which is icing on the cake.
Of course FOTP and Fett also can inflict TL on their basic, so even with reinforcements Mace is still spamming that special and making people invincible. So by late in the round, I'm basically making the team invincible every few turns, and designating a taunter (with Mace's other skill) which is hilarious when you just point it at an invincible ship with the least turn meter...
Vader's ship was the last piece in a puzzle for me. Granted I only got him last night and I've only fought three battles since then, but I completely dominated the enemy. I never needed to bring in more than 1 reinforcement, and it kind of felt like I was toying with the enemy. I don't know if the team holds up very well on defense, and I've got a key weakness in that my team doesn't look very intimidating. My crew score is about 10k-15k less than the people I'm destroying (124k versus 135k-140k), because Vader himself is 6* and G8 still, and Fett and Fives are only G8 as well. And Vader's and Fett's ships are 4* as well. Also, I suspect the AI doesn't spread out target lock and exploit Mace's specials as well as a human operator.
But yeah, I've almost never used Vader's special!
